In Massachusetts prices of auto insurance are going up and the culprit according to insurers are "technology." The most common caused of car accidents are drivers being distracted by their smartphones and modern cars are more expensive because it is equipped with more sensors and devices. This has caused insurance premiums to go up even for drivers who have not had accidents lately.

A couple of insurance company particularly in Massachusetts have been approved by state regulators to bump their rates on average by between 3% and 6% in 2017, with some drivers likely to see even higher increases. The rate increases will probably affect all customers of those companies. Last year the rates jumped between 6% to 9%, on average.

The average premium paid by Massachusetts drivers was $1,108 in 2014, the most recent data available. Mapfre USA Corp., which has 1 million policy holders in Massachusetts will be increasing their premiums by about 4%.
